Background of the Study
In recent years, social media has emerged as a powerful tool for communication, offering individuals and communities a platform for expressing opinions, mobilizing support, and engaging in discussions. However, the growing use of social media in Nigeria has also led to its exploitation in the context of conflicts. In Bauchi Metropolitan Area, a mix of political, ethnic, and religious tensions has been exacerbated by the rapid spread of information and misinformation through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp.

Social media allows for the swift dissemination of news, which can amplify existing grievances and escalate tensions between different groups. In some cases, inflammatory content, hate speech, and rumors spread on social media have triggered violent confrontations, especially in areas where tensions are already high. The ability of social media to bypass traditional media gatekeepers has made it an essential tool for both positive social change and conflict incitement. This study aims to examine the role of social media in escalating conflicts in Bauchi Metropolitan Area, assessing both its positive and negative impacts.

Statement of the Problem
The rise in social media use has contributed to the escalation of conflicts in various parts of Nigeria, including Bauchi Metropolitan Area. While social media has the potential to facilitate dialogue and raise awareness of social issues, it has also been used to incite violence, spread misinformation, and inflame ethnic and religious tensions. The problem lies in the lack of control over the content disseminated on social media platforms, which has led to the rapid spread of harmful narratives that fuel conflict. This study will explore how social media contributes to conflict escalation in Bauchi Metropolitan Area and the potential measures to mitigate its negative effects.
